The Other World

The university's banking associates organised a banking course, worth 1,8 credits (point eight???). It offers a rather interesting view to a humanist. It's in a way as if I observe an alien race. Especially from the linguistic points there are fascinating features: for
instance, during tonight's lecture the lecturer talked about the financial crisis and how it was caused by 'sub-primes'. He did do some overall defining to the term, but not once did he use the Finnish term specially created for these kind of credit type: roskalaina. Because that's what it is: an elaborate paper system in which banks sell, primarily to other banks, invisible things. In the US case, they were selling the American credit business norm (only economists could think of selling norms...) once they've turned them into word babble on paper (and since most of these people are men, they don't dare to ask what the hell the babble actually *means*!).

I'm probably going to have some other remarks to make over the rest of the week and next week while the course lasts. Stay tuned. :)

This is getting ridiculous. I miss Her so much that I'm afraid to see Her. Now I'm skipping gym, too, to avoid seeing Her. On the other hand I spend a lot of time at home watching Her picture. After almost fours years I'm still acting like some damn teen.. and finding out one more little thing about Her makes me go straight to seventh heaven.

Hence, ridiculous. But I wouldn't want to live without it. :)

No niin, teknisten vaikeuksien jälkeen kaikki saivat vihdoin tunnukset SYLin vaalikoneeseen. Laitoin juuri omat vastaukseni kommentteineen koneeseen ja totesin, että tiedän sittenkin aika paljon. Lisäksi osasin perustella näkemykseni aika selkeästi ja yksiselitteisesti. Tiivistämistä pitää vielä harjoitella, mutta toisaalta eräät asiat ja niiden yleisimpien vastausten vastaperustelut pitää kaikki kirjoittaa ylös, kukaan kun ei vielä osaa lukea ajatuksia. :)

Kaikki yliopistolaiset nyt vaalikoneeseen (http://www.edustajistovaalit.fi/), joka aukeaa ensi maanantaina! Vastatkaa, tutkikaa sekä omia että muita ehdokkaita ja heidän kommenttejaan. Huomasin itse kunnallisvaaleissa ja eurovaaleissa, että sain myös muilta kuin omien vastausten perusteella ladotusta Top 10 -ehdokkailta hyviä näkökulmia ja argumentteja monista asioista, eräässä tapauksessa jopa omaa mielipidettä muuttavan paljon.

Okay. This edari thing has gone a lot forward. We (as in all the numerous candidates from the same list and from two -shortly one- faculties) have had the photo session for the campaign poster. Now we're supposed to come up with a slogan!

I was thinking about something very humanist, a literary quote. Walt Whitman, maybe? That would be in English, nicely odd but yet understandable, creating an image of a very intelligent person (provided people would google the phrase) and I also like the self-irony aspect of the phrase. Have to remember to ask about the character limit for the slogans, in case the phrase needs condensation. Okay, what else... one of Dexter's one-liners, perhaps. Richard Dawkins? Carl Sagan? Toni Morrison would be nice but I can't recall anything non-specific at the moment. Have to remember to look into it.

The Loesje text ("Humanisti... Tarvitaanko niitä Nokialla?") would be really interesting but it's in Finnish..!

Today, as last week, we went through romance fiction as a genre. Now, I kept repeating myself both weeks as no one could answer in a logical and objective way to two questions:

1. What is the purpose of romance fiction (apart from making money as they, apart from -or because of- their idiocy sell well)?

2. Instead of reading about happy lives they'd like to have (to some extent) and to get away from their miserable lives, why don't the readers -as in straight women, teens and housewives- actually do something about it, to change their lives to what they'd want them to be?

The second question was left unanswered but the first had some feeble attempts:

* romance fiction is soft porn/ rf is pornography for women
* rf satisfies women's need (?) to change the man and in rf this is possible; also, there are happy endings - everything's black and white
* (my personal favourite:) rf brainwashes women into believing and embracing the warped version of the world constructed by men - this is especially visible in the dominance (men dominant and superior and complete, women/girls inferior and incomplete and in need of guidance) and sexuality (men experienced, women virgins)
* simply a diversion from the daily life (which is closely connected to the second question) and entertainment
* rf has a hidden fantasy element: the battle between good and evil (and good always wins); also, the battle of sexes

Any ideas?
