Intelligence to the power of...

You have got to watch this! The Intelligence Squared Debate on the topic "Is the Catholic Church a force for good in the world?"

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=F821DBF3CE3374A3
(Five parts, each about 10 minutes long)

For: a Nigerian Archbishop with really fancy clothing and jewelry & a British conservative female politician who converted into Catholicism after the Anglican church started to ordain women as pastors

Against: a very well-know British writer and journalist & a very well-known (and along with the previous, one of the few men I can respect) British actor

I was against before and now I'm even more against.

...and I wonder what the general reaction would be if on pro side were, say, Paolo Coelho, and on con side, say, Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist fame?

Oh, that's so unfair! Phelps can't think of a single coherent and logically structured sentence, let alone make an entire speech logical. Mmm.. but then again, I suppose this was the combination from *their* point of view... ;) Naw, he should be on the pro side like all the other irrational I-believe-in-fairies nutters.

Could be, but American baptist fundie-nutters are known to be vehemently opposed to Catholic church...so if one wanted to bias the discussion to make pro side look good, it would be really easy too :)
And there are some rather humane and intelligent Catholics, and catholicism in e.g. South America can be quite different from, say, contemporary Europe. Especially the parts of Europe where the grassroot level of the church is not visible, and we see only the nutters who are on the top (naturally I am not a fan of the current Pope...but there will be other popes)
