Humanistit + hallarit => filosofinen tiedekunta
Ok, sounds good enough. Anything's better than the "haahuilijoille huuhaata" faculty, Faculty of Humanities and Administration. I have to admit, this sounds even better than Humanities. The key word being "sounds".
What does an employer think of when seeing this title? I would think of extensive knowledge on philosophy in addition to the major. Plus the co-operation between philosophy and the major. But there is none. A couple of years ago the Administration set up a temporary place for a philosophy lecturer. The same guy has been here -temporarily- for three years now. The violation of temporary employment laws aside, the subject has been a voluntary one. I would expect that with this reform philosophy becomes an obligatory subject of a course or two for all students.
But. The funding issues has not evaporated anywhere. The sponsors still get to decide where their funds go and the target ain't gonna be no humanities in disguise. Which leaves us only one thing to do: hope that the university manages to get the one million euros to get the 2,5 m from the government which would be also targeted to us poor (pun intended) humanists. But what if they don't get the one million? What happens then? Anyway, with no sponsors, the new faculty will not be able to get a philosophy lecturer and if not, the whole name -albeit mighty grand- won't really hold up to its promises and therefore the university has failed to "profile in the national higher education field". And we all know where this will lead.
But anyway, for the time being I'll stay here. It would be nice to know I would have been good enough for Turku, too, though. A little something for those of us living in the business shadow.
Now I absolutely have to come up with a subject for my thesis so I can maybe next year get the hell out of here before the Faculty of Philosophy bubble bursts like a certain housing bubble.
