Those of you who were adults when 9/11 took place: do you remember any censorship in radio playlists during the time following the event? I'm currently reading a book on music censorship at the present time and there is a chapter on censoring certain songs/bands from radio playlists. Lots of Beatles and AC/DC, also Metallica, System of a Down, Elton John, the whole Rage against the Machine opus censored... I was just wondering if any songs, that are usually played on air, were taken off. I tried to find playlists from September 2001 but, for instance, Radiomafia's playlists from that month were not there; August was there, October was there, but not September. I'll continue looking other stations' playlist archives.

I must say I cannot remember if anything that was popular before went off air, though I guess there was some attention paid to songs played...and on the other hand I didn't hear anyone picking any commentary songs about the event like in US "Killing an Arab" by Cure infamously getting a good deal more airplay...

Don't remember noticing any censorship either.
Poor Robert Smith & The Cure. Afterwards they felt the need to explain their Camus lyrics...

No big changes in the playlists I could find. The Cure case is, in my opinion, fairly predictable. It's mainly about the title of the song and if the ultra-nationalist self-righteous redneck gets to sing along the title... well, like they give a fuck about the other lyrics, let alone their cultural context. I was trying to find songs/bands whose lyrics would somehow refer to the event in any way, big or small (like 'TNT' & 'Highway to Hell' by AC/DC, or 'Fly away' by Lenny Kravitz, or even Lennon's 'Imagine'), or lyrics the ultra-nationalist yaddayaddayadda could find offensive. I mean, you could see the same thing in post-9/11 discussion: anyone who dared to say that perhaps USA had it coming were labelled unpatriotic and especially unamerican. Sort of right-wing hypersensitivity. That's what I was trying to see, if Finland had the virus, too.
